Professor David Harries is the Director of the Centre for Research into Energy for Sustainable Transport (CREST), a joint Murdoch University and Curtin University of Technology Centre of Excellence. CREST is a national centre of expertise for the development, testing and commercialisation of new transport fuels/systems that meet sustainability criteria. Prof. Harries is also the inaugural Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), which was established by Murdoch University in 2003 to assist the development of Australia’s renewable and sustainable energy industries. The Institute’s activities include energy system testing in its NATA accredited renewable energy system testing laboratory (ResLab), teaching, professional development, training, policy analysis and research and development. Its focus is on solar, wind energy and other renewable energy systems and fuels for use in remote area power systems, distributed generation systems, buildings and transport uses. Relevant professional appointments 2002–2004: Executive Director, Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO). David was the first Executive Director appointed to the Western Australian Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO), which was modelled on the successful Sustainable Energy Development Office in NSW (SEDA) and its role is to provide the WA Minister for Energy and the WA Government with independent advice on sustainable energy policy. 1999–2002: Assistant Director, Office of Energy Planning and Conservation, Tasmania. Deputy Chair Tasmanian Electricity Network Reliability and Planning Panel. Deputy Chair Tasmanian Electricity Code Change Panel. Tasmanian government representative on a number of national electricity, gas and renewable energy policy committees, including Senior Committee of Officials for the Ministerial Council on Energy and Minerals, Senior Committee of Officials for the Ministerial Council on Energy, National Mandated Renewable Energy Target Working Group, National Gas Reform Implementation Group, and National Advisory Panel on Third Party Access to Gas Pipelines 1997–1998: Senior Policy Analyst, Office of Energy Planning and Conservation, Tasmania. 1990–1996: Research Assistant, Tutor, Laboratory Manager, Centre for Environmental Studies, University of Tasmania. 1986-1996: Environmental Consultant. Prof. Harries is currently also the President of the Conservation Council of western Australia.
